Product Review: FinaMill Spice Grinder

This is a first for me, and for the blog. I was contacted and asked to try out a product – a hand held spice grinder. Let’s be honest, they had me at kitchen gadget. I figured I’d get to review something fun, and post it on my blog. I wasn’t anticipating finding something I would be using on a regular basis in my kitchen.
But I did! I didn’t expect to like it as much as I do! It’s actually really nice, and came at just the right time. As much as I love my Mickey salt grinder, and my pepper grinder, they are both having some issues and I was beginning to believe it was time to retire them. I’d have just gone out and gotten a couple of cheap replacements, but this little machine is awesome.
First, it’s easily useable with one hand and the push of a button. It’s easy and fast, and requires one hand. If you’re cooking and one hand is messy, that is a huge bonus. Plus, its smooth plastic, which makes it super easy to clean. I also really like their pod system. You just press down to click the pod in, and do it again to pop it out, so it’s easy to load one pod with salt and one with pepper. I mix allspice berries into my peppercorns, and my old handheld grinder always had problems with that. This does not.
Plus, for people with arthritis, mobility issues, or carpal tunnel, this would be fantastic. It requires very little hand strength, and its pretty lightweight. It has some heft depending on what is in the pods and how full they are, but its not so heavy I’d be worried.
I no longer have to hand grind the tiny bit of caraway I put in my goulash. I can load it up and push a button, and either empty the pod or just leave it in the pod and put it back in the cabinet for later.
You can adjust the pods to make the grind more or less fine as well. It even has an LED light on the bottom that turns on when you’re grinding. This is a little detail that doesn’t have much impact, but if you are using it and have low or poor lighting you can see just how much your putting on.
Now, if you’re trying to grind up a lot of spice for a recipe, you don’t want to use this. It’s not meant for grinding large quantities of spices. So if you’re trying to get a couple teaspoons ground up, a traditional coffee/spice grinder is the way to go. But if you need a sprinkle of something, or you want to use it everyday for salt and pepper its great. I have also used it to grind overtop of foccaccia bread.
They have pods coming soon that will be designed for dried leafy herbs, fresh herbs, and oilier spices. The ones out now are more for smaller things like peppercorns and such.
Let’s talk price point – the FinaMill comes with two pods, and it was $25 on Amazon when I looked. Frankly, it isn’t really that much more expensive than buying a couple of really nice pepper grinders to use in the kitchen.
